Summer Styling Tips: How to Stay Cool, Feel Confident & Love Your Wardrobe This July
Summer should make getting dressed easier... right?
Not always.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that fewer layers mean fewer decisions. In reality, summer styling can be one of the trickiest seasons. Between staying cool, dressing for the heat, and wanting to feel confident in your clothes, it's easy to fall into the habit of wearing the same few outfits over and over.
As a personal stylist, I see this all the time. Most people already have a closet full of clothes—they just need a fresh perspective on how to wear them.
If you're wondering how to dress for hot weather while still looking put together, these simple summer styling tips will help you make the most of your wardrobe.
1. Choose Breathable Fabrics
The fabric you wear can completely change how you feel on a hot summer day.
Look for natural, breathable materials like linen, cotton, bamboo, and lightweight blends. These fabrics allow air to circulate, helping you stay cool while giving your outfit an effortless, polished look.
When you're comfortable, confidence comes naturally.
2. Accessories Complete Your Outfit
Accessories are often the missing piece.
A simple tank and shorts can feel completely different when paired with layered jewelry, a straw bag, stylish sunglasses, or a statement belt.
The best part? Accessories help create fresh outfits without buying an entirely new wardrobe.
3. Create Shape Without Sacrificing Comfort
Flowy summer clothing is comfortable—but too much volume can hide your shape.
Try defining your waist with a belt, half-tucking a shirt, tying a button-up at the waist, or choosing silhouettes that gently highlight your natural shape.
These small styling tricks make a big impact while keeping you cool.
4. Don't Forget Your Shoes
Shoes can completely change the feel of an outfit.
Whether it's a classic white sneaker, leather sandal, loafer, or espadrille, choosing the right footwear helps pull everything together.
Instead of reaching for the same pair every day, think of your shoes as the finishing touch.
5. Balance Is the Secret to Great Style
One of the easiest styling rules to remember is balance.
If you're wearing a loose linen shirt or flowy blouse, pair it with a more fitted bottom like tailored shorts, slim jeans, or a pencil skirt.
If you're wearing wide-leg pants, a maxi skirt, or other flowy bottoms, balance them with a fitted tank or tucked-in tee.
This creates proportion and gives your outfit a polished, intentional look.
6. Shop Your Closet Before You Shop the Stores
Before adding more clothes to your wardrobe, take a second look at what you already own.
Most people wear only a fraction of their closet on a regular basis. Mixing pieces differently, adding accessories, or trying new combinations can make your wardrobe feel brand new.
One of my favourite things about being a sustainable stylist is helping clients discover outfits they never realized they already had.
